Two Magical Days in Amboseli National Park: My Safari Dreams Come to Life

Imagine sipping coffee while elephants roam in the distance and Mount Kilimanjaro rises in the background like a scene from a dream. That’s exactly how I spent two unforgettable days in Amboseli National Park. From heart-pounding game drives to peaceful sundowners in the bush, this trip delivered pure magic—and a much-needed reset. Celebrating my birthday in Amboseli was something I’ll remember forever (ask the group that traveled with me, I cried off and on ALL DAY from gratitude and overwhelm.) The only thing that was missing was my family – I cried because I missed them too! On this special birthday, we visited a local Maasai village—a vibrant, welcoming community that opened their hearts and homes to us, not to mention much song and dance!

As part of the visit, the women wrapped me in traditional Maasai garments, complete with layered beadwork and rich fabrics that felt like a warm embrace. It was such an honor and deeply moving moment—equal parts humbling and joyful.

The village visit offered a glimpse into their traditions, daily life, and the powerful role of women in the community (like for real the women do everything, even the men said they are lazy while the women cook, raise kids, build houses, fetch water and more!) It reminded me just how expansive and beautiful this world is—and how travel connects us in the most unexpected ways – even if it sometimes feels uncomfortable.

Where We Stayed: Tortilis Camp, the Perfect Safari Base

Tucked into a private conservancy just outside the park, Tortilis Camp instantly felt like a hidden oasis. The views of Kilimanjaro are unreal, the staff made us feel like family, and the eco-luxe tents offered the perfect blend of comfort and adventure.

Highlights:

1. Unmatched Views of Mount Kilimanjaro
Tortilis Camp boasts the most iconic view in Amboseli—Mount Kilimanjaro framed perfectly behind acacia trees and elephant herds. Whether you’re sipping coffee on your tent deck or enjoying sundowners by the fire pit, that snow-capped peak feels like pure magic.

2. Exclusive Access in a Private Conservancy
Unlike many camps inside the park, Tortilis is in a private conservancy, which means your game drives come with fewer vehicles, more freedom to explore, and the chance to get even closer to the wildlife (hello, elephant herds!). It’s luxury, privacy, and immersion all in one.

3. Eco-Luxury Meets Warm Hospitality
Tortilis nails the balance of sustainable design and indulgent comfort. Think: solar-powered tents with hot showers and plush beds, personalized service that feels like a warm hug, and meals made with ingredients fresh from their own organic garden.

The Game Drives: Elephants, Giraffes & Everything In Between

If you’re headed to Amboseli – known for it’s wild tusker elephants – be ready for wildlife moments you’ll never forget. Our guides knew everything—from elephant family history, to the habits of elusive predators, to every bird species in the conservatory.

What we spotted (I lost count!):

  • Massive herds of elephants (with babies in tow!)
  • Giraffes striking a pose in the golden light
  • Zebras, wildebeest, hyenas, and more

What to Expect on a Game Drive (And Why It’s the Best Kind of Wake-Up Call)

Game drives start early—think 6:00 a.m.—but trust me, it’s worth the alarm. You’ll hop into a safari vehicle, wrap yourself in a cozy blanket, and sip your coffee while watching the savanna wake up.

Your guide will:

  • Track animals based on footprints, sounds, and gut instinct
  • Share insights about behavior, habitat, and history
  • Stop for the best surprise: bush breakfast

Bush Breakfasts & Sundowners: Peak Safari Vibes

After a morning spotting wildlife, we stopped in a shady clearing for breakfast—fresh fruit, eggs, and coffee in the middle of the bush. There’s something grounding about eating outdoors while elephants graze nearby.

And the evenings? Sundowners.
Each night, we parked in the perfect golden-hour spot, toasted to the day’s sightings with a G&T in hand, and watched the sun dip behind Kilimanjaro.

Amboseli swept me off my feet in just two days. Whether you’re a first-timer or safari regular, this park’s iconic views, intimate animal encounters, and peaceful pace make it feel like a true escape. Are you ready to go on your own safari? Let’s make it happen—I’ll handle the details so you can focus on soaking up the wonder.
